HCAS Annual Summer Book Club Discussion (Virtual)

Friday, July 25
5:00 - 6:30 PM PT / 8:00 - 9:30 PM ET

Topic: Rerum Novarum – Encyclical of Pope Leo XIII on Capital and Labor

Join HCAS Board Directors Jordan Monge (AB ’12) and Oriana Li Halevy (AB ’92) for this year’s summer book club discussion, featuring not a book but a short, foundational text on Catholic social teaching: Rerum Novarum, Pope Leo XIII’s 1891 encyclical On the Rights and Duties of Capital and Labor.

foto-ufficiale-papa-leone-xiv_copyright-vatican-mediaWith renewed global attention on the Church’s role in addressing modern social and economic challenges—especially in light of the recent papal election—this document is more relevant than ever. In fact, Pope Leo XIV cited Rerum Novarum as a guiding inspiration in choosing his name, saying:

“Mainly because Pope Leo XIII, in his encyclical Rerum Novarum, addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution. In our own day, the Church offers to everyone the treasury of her social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defence of human dignity, justice, and labour.”

We invite you to read this short but seminal work and join us for a thoughtful discussion about its continued relevance in the age of AI.
